Understanding and Treating ARFID: Recognition, Interventions and Therapeutic Strategies

CE Hours 1.5

About this live event

Join us for a continuing education event hosted by Accanto Health and presented by Sara Hofmeier, MS, LCMHCS, CEDS-S. There is no fee to attend this course. This course offers a comprehensive exploration of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), examining its onset in childhood and prevalence across the lifespan. Participants will gain the expertise needed to confidently identify ARFID's clinical presentations and understand the factors contributing to its persistence. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing treatment approaches specific to ARFID from those used for other eating disorders, while also exploring commonalities. Through a review of current therapeutic interventions and practical guidance on their application in outpatient settings, participants will learn effective strategies for managing ARFID and coordinating multidisciplinary care teams.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify core symptoms and presentations of ARFID
  • Review approaches to psychological treatment for ARFID
  • Discuss team collaboration opportunities in the treatment of ARFID

Learning Levels

  • Beginner to intermediate

Target Audience

This educational program is designed for mental health professionals, dietitians, social workers, and health care providers.

  • Sara Hofmeier, MS, LCMHCS, CEDS-S

Sara Hofmeier is a Licensed Professional Counselor, having earned her Master’s in Counseling from UNC Greensboro. Sara has been working with patients with eating disorders since 2007 and comes to Veritas from the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders where she was the program’s Clinical Director and an Assistant Professor. Sara has experience providing individual, group, and family therapy for patients with eating disorders across multiple levels of care including inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient treatment settings. In addition to her experience in direct patient care, Sara has extensive experience providing supervision and training to new therapists and particularly enjoys providing supervision around the care and treatment of patients with eating disorders.

Sara also believes in a collaborative and strengths-based approach to treatment and particularly enjoys helping patients find new ways to describe their experiences and struggles in a non-judgmental manner as they move toward recovery.
