[Internal] OMG[LP-1s] -- Eating Disorders and the Rise of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists

CE Hours 2

About this live event

Medication names such as Ozempic and Wegovy have become ubiquitous in the public, professional, and medical zeitgeist. These Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1As) and their use have generated myriad emotions, including excitement, concern, worry and outrage in American society. Join us as we discuss what GLP-1s are, why they are generating so much interest, and what they are being prescribed for across the nation. Develop an understanding of the benefits of these medications, particularly for those with Type II Diabetes Mellitus, while also considering the risks of perpetuating weight stigma, disordered eating, and eating disorders in people of all ages. We'll also discuss the recommended approaches when people with active eating disorders are prescribed these medications, whether for Type II Diabetes or weight loss / management.

Learning Objectives

  • Compare and contrast the use of GLP-1 RAs for treating diabetes and for weight management.
  • Develop the capacity to articulate how GLP-1 RAs cause weight reduction, as well as the costs and benefitsof taking GLP-1 RAs.
  • Describe three different ways the rise of of GLP-1 RAs is negatively impacting weight neutrality efforts and contributing to the risk of eating disorder development.
  • Apply recommended approaches when working with clients who have disordered eating or clinical eating disorders and are taking (or considering taking) GLP-1 RAs for weight loss.
